The first release of 2020 was billed as a polish release, improving existing beta and stable features, while also adding Topology Manager beta, Ingress path types with IngressClass, and an alpha kubectl debug command.

What 1.18 brought

beta

Topology Manager

Lets the kubelet line up CPU and device allocations on the same NUMA node, helping latency-sensitive workloads on multi-socket machines.

Ingress pathType and IngressClass

Ingress gains Exact and Prefix path matching plus an IngressClass resource and ingressClassName field, replacing the old class annotation.

beta

Server-side Apply second beta

A new beta of Server-side Apply tracks field changes on all new objects, so you can see what changed a resource and when.

alpha

kubectl alpha debug

A new command starts a temporary container next to a running Pod and attaches to it for interactive troubleshooting, building on ephemeral containers.

Windows CSI Proxy

An alpha CSI proxy lets CSI drivers run on Windows nodes by performing privileged storage operations for containers.

Notable graduations to stable

Graduations include taint-based eviction, kubectl diff, API server dry run, CSI raw block storage, PVC cloning and node-local DNS cache.

Version skew with a 1.18 API server

  • kubelet, kube-proxy: 1.16 to 1.18
  • kube-controller-manager, scheduler: 1.17 to 1.18
  • kubectl: 1.17 to 1.19

From the official version skew policy as it stands today.
